Functional Requirements Document for D-ESP Wand

1. The wand shall be capable of collecting a DWSM water sample and providing contextual sensor water from a point (ROV positioned) up to 10m away from the D-ESP and at a two position height; in the vent between -30 to -20 cm, above the vent, 20 to 30 cm above the seafloor. ROV may be used to switch positions.
2. The wand shall operated at water temperatures up to 120°C. [121 °C is considered to be the temperature limit to life].
3. The wand shall also be capable of collecting a DWSM sample and providing contextual sensor water from a point nearby the ESP, at an ROV positional height between 100 and 150 cm above the seafloor.
4. The wand shall measure water temperature at the collection point (measurement signal routed possibly thru the CTD). Minimum temperature accuracy is ±1 °C and resolution is better than ±1 °C. Measurements shall be collected at 15 second intervals during inhalation and at 2 minute intervals all other times. Minimum calibrated temperature shall be 0 °C. Maximum calibrated temperature shall be approximately 150 °C. Measurements shall be available real-time to be displayed in the control room when the ROV is connected to the D-ESP via cable, and recorded within D-ESP for post-deployment analysis.
5. The wand shall prevent particles greater than 0.5 mm in the longest dimension from entering the collection tube for DWSM. No particle exclusion is required for the contextual sensor water.
6. The wand shall include sufficient cooling capacity to deliver water that does not exceed 25 °C to DWSM, the contextual sensors, and water pump.
7. The wand shall deliver water to the contextual sensors at a constant flow rate (±??) between 500 and 1000 mL/min.
8. DWSM intake max rate shall be ½ of the wand delivery rate.
9. The wand shall be flushed between sampling events so that uncontaminated water is collected and delivered to DWSM and the contextual sensors during subsequent sampling events. It would be preferable that the contextual sensors do not make measurements of contaminated water at any time and that continuous time-series are collected throughout the deployment.
10. The wand and tubing shall be managed and protected, during deployment and recovery, to prevent damage and fouling with ROV hydraulic lines, manipulators, and/or the thrusters.
